Triguna : Sattva,Rajas and Tamas

I have visited the ISKCON Tample near Gujarat yesterday,

Where I’ve entered into one exhibition hall, here i find lots of banner on spiritual expression related to lord Krishna(Hindu God.)

According to one banner every living organisms consist the mixture of ‘triguna'(Three basic Quality or attribute of nature) name Sattva, Rajas and Tamas.

Shri Krishna in Bhagavad Gita laid great stress upon these three gunas. gunas were first explained in Sankhya Philosophy.

These three gunas are basic attributes of mother Nature who creates the universe with the help of these three gunas.

Sattva – Is the light, the purity, the kindness charity and compassion

Raj – is ego, bravery, jealousy, wars, struggles and helping with a motive

Tam – is inertia, selfishness, shrewdness troubling others and keeping everything without progress.

When there is imbalance of these gunas, the universe comes into existence. A traveller on the path of truth has to first control his Tam with the help of Raj and Sat and then Raj with the help of sat and finally leave Sat also.

The one who goes beyond these three gunas is enlightened.

In Bhagavad Gita too, Shri Krishna said

ये चैव सात्त्विका भावा राजसास्तामसाश्च ये।

मत्त एवेति तान्विद्धि नत्वहं तेषु ते मयि।।7.12।।

Those things that indeed are made of (the quality of ) sattva, and those things that are made of (the quality of) rajas and tamas, know them to have sprung from Me alone. However, I am not in them; they are in Me!

Now something from the net :

Three Gunas: called trigunas, they are : Sattava, Rajas and Tamas. The word ‘guna’ means quality or attribute. This refers to three personality types which exert influence on our activities, behaviour and attitudes.

Sattva guna is full of virtue, softness, patience, endurance and deeper meaning.Sattvic people are non-violent,sympathetic,compassion,peace lovers and so on.Satvic behaviour is of divine nature.
Rajasic guna is full of activity, passionate and result-oriented.

A rajasic person is a man of action, kingly and commanding. He or she must be a good organiser and leader of men.

Tamasic guna represents passive nature, lethargic and indolent, may be inconsiderate to others, brutal behaviour..

No one is always 100% sattvic. The other two gunas may be exhibited in part and a person may be sattvic in speech and rajasic in action. Therefore we say that sattvic nature should be cultivated and one should convert tamasic tendencies to rajasic and then to sattivic nature.Much has been written about the three gunas in Bhagavad Gita and other scriptures..To illustrate, the devotional methods can be according to the three gunas thus: Sattvic–quiet mental prayer and meditation; rajasic devotion or bhakthi–singing and dancing, taking out processions, elaborate rituals in temples;tamasic –just listening to hymns, following processions, giving money without participation.

A saintly person seeking liberation or moksha goes beyond the three gunas or triguna-deetam.
